I remember when this song first came out. At the time, I was interested in another section of the rap world. For me it was De La Soul, particularly Posdnous, but there was so much remarkable innovation happening all over the place. Some call this period, “the golden age of rap.” But the impact of this album, and particularly this song, was hard to miss. Nas seemed to be bringing a more delicate artistry and poetry to a side of rap mostly characterized with grit and hardship. He is certainly the grandfather of so many of the most remarkable artists today, like Vince Staples and JID, to name a couple of my favorites.

“It drops deep as it does in my breath
I never sleep, ’cause sleep is the cousin of death
Beyond the walls of intelligence, life is defined
I think of crime when I’m in a New York state of mind”
