This image is an interpretation of the Mexican deity Santa Muerte (Saint Death). Mexico has expanded the idea of Catholic canonized saints in unique and wonderful ways. This is one far-reaching example. Some find it unsettling but many others find comfort in a symbol that more directly confronts our mortality with the same visual vocabulary of Catholicism.
