When Tupac died, I hadn’t really listened to his music. I didn’t understand who he was or what he represented to American culture.

When he died though, I saw huge, powerful shockwaves move through the collective mind of our culture. Black people were grieving in a way that I didn’t expect or understand and it was clear that something really important had come and gone before white people had a chance to understand it. To a large degree we still don’t. 

When I did finally give myself over to his music and put effort into understanding it, I discovered for myself what so many people already knew. Tupac expertly navigated worlds that so few people get a chance to visit.

I often tell white people that rap music is one of the most important intellectual advancements in the history of people, second perhaps to literacy. It’s also one of the most significant ethical movements in the history of humanity. One that has substantial, utilitarian value. One underlying message in all rap is this: We have nothing, we are under attack, and we are constantly humiliated. Let’s get together and dance and celebrate being alive.

A wonderful lesson for those of us who are not under attack and who are not humiliated. A wonderful lesson that should make us feel embarrassed by our own boring lack of celebration and thankfulness. 

All rap artists can provide us with this beautiful lesson. Very few do it with the ease and sophistication of Tupac. 

He would be 47 today. Happy birthday good friend! You’ve sparked millions of minds. Love!
