October and Day of the Dead is the best time to share art inspired by the Memento Mori and Danse Mabre themes. I love this kind of art! From the grim, brooding imagery of early Medieval printmakers – to the enlightenment sensibilities of Hans Holbein in the Renaissance – through to the modern period with the prints of José Guadalupe Posada! I particularly appreciate the Mexican take on it which is warm and playful and infused with a joyful spirit of celebration for people that we have loved and lost.
Autumn is the time when we contemplate death because we start to see echoes of it in nature. The trees become skeletal. This is why All Hallows’ Eve and Dia De Los Muertos happen when they do.
Below you’ll also find prints and products inspired by bits of music and literature dealing with death, written by a handful of writers that I love, including Kurt Vonnegut, William Blake, Baby Keem, Langston Hughes, Nas and Dylan Thomas.
